Apronology Spring'12

In my little corner of the world the new year has started with a bang with 2 magazine features that surpassed any expectations or even dreams. When I heard from Beth Livesay Editor of Apronology that one of my designs was going to be featured I was thrilled but to hear I got the cover made my heart sing.

And there was this amazing gift, to be featured as one of Romantic Home's Magazines "The Romantics". There aren't words to describe how blessed I am.

Working hard and having your efforts validated is priceless.

As a business owner I have found it is of utmost importance that you lay your ground work so you are always prepared, like a good Girl Scout, for what is around the corner. Dont wait for the phone to ring to whip your website, products, etc. into shape. You never know who may be looking at your product or service and wanting to promote you in some manner but thinks you are not quite ready. Those missed opportunities can be lost forever.

Another thing Ive learned is PR doesn't necessarily translate into sales. It does heighten awareness about your business which does ultimately bring in more sales but even more importantly is serves as establishing credibility. Credibility in business is everything! When you hear about a person, product or service and want to know more you will undoubtedly Google the name. What happens if you cant find any information, you move on. So be absolutely sure you have laid your ground work so when an opportunity comes along you can be found and have a credible reputation.

Guess Who's going to be at Sweet Salvage?

Christie Repasy the beloved artist that captures the romance of roses like no other will be a special guest at Sweet Salvage in Arizona for their

"Romancing the Home" event January 19th-21st.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Christie and she is as

beautiful as the bouquets she paints.

A passionate yet modest heart that takes nothing for granted.

Christie's studio is an amazing escape to a world filled with everything romantic.

Elegant charms, mirrors, note cards and pieces of furniture and of course her paintings with her signature roses are available on her website and

at the "Vintage Marketplace" Flea she puts on quarterly

with her sister in-law, Rita Reade of Mammabellarte.

Christie has also began teaching painting techniques in her poolside classroom. Students are spoiled by the gorgeous surroundings and served lunch garden side.

She resides in Southern California in a lovely cottage with her son and 2 dogs.

Missing My Mother

Tomorrow is my mother's birthday so I thought I

would share one of her pieces with you.

This is my favorite. She gave it to me one year for Christmas.

She passed away in 1995 after a very brave 3 year fight with cancer.

She loved to paint more than anything and statues and figurines were her favorite.

When you are feeling low and uncertain take heart that you are not alone.

Last week I was given many gifts from dear friends,

not gifts wrapped in pretty paper and tied with ribbon
although those are so fun to open

They were the kind of gifts that money can't buy;

prayers, kind words, and emails of encouragement.

To all of you my cherished friends, I Thank You for being you and letting me be me.

Our thoughts of home are so powerful.

The place where we belong.

Where we are molded into who we are.

The smell of your favorite soap, the sounds of your family.

Have you ever broken down in an unfamiliar place and

all you could think is how you want to go home?

When I mop the sticky mess from the kid's cooking experiment gone wrong

I will not complain but rejoice with a heart full of gratitude that I am in this place.

I hope all of you had a wonderful, joyful Christmas!

Here are a few pictures of my trees.

I always put the white tree decorated with red bulbs in my dining room

to go along with my red, white and black decor.

I love birds so aside from the ones that stay up all year I add them to the holiday decor.

This has got to be the easiest last minute centerpiece to pull together.
Any plate or bowl filled with bulbs looks so pretty. I added a candelabra to the center.

Dreaming of a "Cottage Christmas"

Vintage Marketplace in Rainbow, CA this weekend.

Gratitude

~A dare to LIVE FULLY right where you are~

I started reading this book last summer and I have to be honest with you, I didn't know what I was in for. You see I have this thing for birds' nests and I was smitten with the blue eggs on the cover shot.
"A dare to live fully right where you are" struck me. I'm up for a good dare if its meaningful and thought provoking.

So, game on!

As I began reading I was truly taken by author Ann Voskamp's ability to be candid. This type of laying one's self completely naked to be scrutinized comes at a high price.
Reading her work is like listening to a conversation she is having deep within her soul. Chewing on thoughts and ideas and being interrupted by the daily chores of farm life. Ann asks the hard questions that many of us ponder but never raise our hand and ask either because of fear or lack of faith. I was one of those that didnt ask the questions, I think it was because of fear.

"What in the world, in a world of certain loss, is GRACE"?

Every time I turn on the t.v. I hear yet another tragedy reported. I have to admit it was stealing my joy, my peace and my passion. I was overwhelmed.

Then the most liberating thing happen on page 58 and I quote:

"Why would the world need more anger, more outrage? How does it save the world to reject unabashed joy when it is joy that saves us? Rejecting joy to stand in solidarity with the suffering doesnt save the suffering. The converse does. The brave who focus on all things good and all things beautiful and all things true, even in the small, who give thanks for it and discover joy even in the here and now, they are the change agents who bring fullest Light to all the world."

These words spoke so deeply to my heart I sobbed. We have to be the change we want to see in the world otherwise what is it all for and Im not willing to give in to it.

I began writing a list of 1,000 things to be thankful for. This is not just another exercise in list making. It will, I promise, change your life if you approach it with an open heart.

So on this Thanksgiving give yourself the gift of peace and gratitude and begin your list of 1,000 things you are thankful for.

I plan to reread the book every Thanksgiving and start a new list.

Wishing you and your family all the hope, grace and peace of the season.

In a world full of follow me, blinking signs, maps, click here, this way and endless self help books targeted at guiding you towards what is packaged as your dream,
it's important to step back and evaluate what
YOUR PATH TRULY IS.
Not what someone else thinks it is. This is where self examination is of utmost importance to you and the nurturing of your soul.

Do you ever feel like you are standing on the edge waiting to
take a step towards your dreams but are held back by
doubt, worry, fear or even jealousy?

I want to remind you that those things will suck the life out of your dreams. It will choke every bit of creativity out of you and leave you feeling empty.
These beautiful dreams you have deep inside of you is what you were created for. There is no other you out there that can accomplish the things you want to do better than you.

You MUST take the first step and follow your path. You may not know where the path will lead you and that's ok. That's a part of the beautiful journey you are on.

Each step will lead you further along and as you keep traveling along your path you will learn new things, acquire new skills, and add new tools that will help you reach your destination.

This is where you need to turn off the comparison mirror. Remember the evil queen from Snow White? How she looked in the comparison mirror?

DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO ANYONE!
What you don't see when you compare yourself to Miss So&So is what is going on on the inside. Everyone struggles, some harder than others.
What shapes you is the ability to keep trying and not giving up because
Miss So & So did it first.
The truth is Miss So&So probably busted her butt, cried on the floor, ate a gallon of ice-cream and lost a lot of sleep on her way to creating that thing that is now her prized piece of work.

If Miss So & So could give you her honest opinion she would hold your face in her hands and

look into your eyes and say,

"Follow YOUR Dreams, Anything IS Possible".

Do not be afraid to follow your passion or march to the beat of your own drum.

This IS your life to make whatever you want out of it.

Comfort Food!

Grab 3 simple ingredients and in less than 1 hour you have a wonderful Fall dinner!

1 package of Stove Top Stuffing, I prefer the chicken flavor, 1 can Apple pie filling,

(is that a tootsie roll bag in the back? busted!)

And pork chops!

Spread the pie filling in the bottom of a 13x9 pan.

Top with pork chops.

Prepare stuffing (just mix with water & butter) and spread on top of chops.

Cover with foil, bake @375* for 30 mins.Uncover and bake 10 more minutes.

The flavor of sweet apples complements the tangy & salty stuffing perfectly.

This is a family favorite, even my 9 year old likes it!

"How a child sees it"

I thought I'd share this with you. My youngest son put this

on my sewing table and it tugged at my heart!

I dont know where this toy bear came from and there was nothing special about it but it was loved for reasons I will never know. But to a little boy it is a priceless treasure.

Oh if we could embrace life with childlike

wonder how differently we would see things.

My first article, Published!

Have you ever done something that you didn't think
you could do?
Well that is exactly the case with the first article I wrote. Thirty years ago when I was in high school I took a journalism class and fell in love with writing. Unfortunately my family life was unstable and I was shuffled between my parents and there wasn't any room in life for pursuing dreams so needless to say those things were locked away deep inside me. Recently I was asked to submit an article by Kiki Nakita for her new online magazine, "My 365". My heart raced at the idea and my head was filled with all kinds of questions; should I? What if my article isn't good enough? I decided to put on my brave girl face and try my best. I submitted the article and crossed my fingers. I could not believe the response, Kiki was so sweet she said she loved it and wanted a picture of me to put in the magazine too!

Girls you have to put yourself out there even though its really scary. You have to be you and follow your creative dreams no matter what anyone says. Don't let doubt win. I could have passed on the opportunity but I would have regretted it and wondered what might have been.

Season of Change

I love Fall and all it invokes; the cool evenings, comfort food,

the leaves turning and the sun sits lower in the sky. Im not sure which is my favorite season, it seems I'm always ready for change when the calendar beckons though. Lately Ive been thinking a lot about change as shared in this post. Its interesting how many times someone has said to me over the years, "there is a season for everything". I'm sure you've heard that yourself but how do you really know when one of those seasons is over and you shouldn't hang in there?
That's one of those nagging questions that most of us have a hard time answering.

You know what Ive come to realize in my 45 years of(insert sarcasm) brilliant wisdom?

Trust your gut!

MmmHmmm, that's it girls. Trust yourselves.

You've learned how to do a million things from changing diapers to changing a spare tire, you really can do anything, so why can't you trust your hunches, your gut, that funny feeling you know all the way down to your toes?

You know when its time for a change. If you're anything like me you can certainly see it a mile away when its someone else's season to change. You've helped your friends, co-workers, children, spouses and the list goes on, now its time for you.

Do that thing whatever it is that you know you need to do. The sooner you do you'll see it wasn't so hard and you will learn more about yourself than you ever expected. Take it from me the fraidy cat!

The second Launch Your Creativity Event was held last Saturday, October 1st at Paris In A Cup Tea Salon. It was an amazing event full of inspiration. It is an absolute gift to be able to put this event on. What started as a dream has become

an event that is hard for me to describe.

Each speaker touched the hearts and hopes of the guests. This forum is a place where women come together to be encouraged and learn how to start/grow their dream business. There is no other event like this as there is a strong emphasis on inspiring and encouraging one another. Its not your prepackaged women's business seminar. Take time for the little things

Its been a very hectic week getting ready for LYC and I really didn't want any interruptions to my busy work day yesterday. So when my dogs kept barking and carrying on I was a tad annoyed. Its typically a coyote taunting them through the fence. So when I went to check on them and realized what a beautiful day it was outside I decided to sit outside for a few minutes and take a break. Thats when I saw this little cutie pie. There were 3 but 2 were hiding in the trees. Had I not taken a few minutes to regroup I would have missed the blessing of this sweet little visitor.

Make sure you take time for the little things and dont miss a blessing in disguise.

A funny thing happened on the way here

to this place I call "My Life".

Have you ever completely misread something, someone or

had the wrong take altogether on something? And then felt horrible because you missed it?
replayed it countless times, analyzed it to death? And then were not so particularly nice to yourself because of it? Show of hands girls? No one can see you, tun off the webcam.
I put both up, one for me and one for you.

Allow me to elaborate. You may want a cookie to go with this.

Remember when I said I would be making some changes?

Well this is just the beginning.

You've heard "the beginning of the rest of your life" used many times and I dont mean to sound cliche but why not have a new beginning today and tomorrow and the next day?

Who says that because you missed the mark in some way that you can't start fresh? Isnt that what we tell our children when they are in a pile of tears? We dont tear them down, we wouldnt tear our best friend or husband down. So why do we do it to ourselves?

The sun will come out tomorrow

Ive noticed something about myself and Im just going to put it out there because I think you will understand. I am really good at forgiving others, encouraging others and even putting people on a pedestal(not something I recommend) but not myself. Perhaps it is rooted in the father that nothing was good enough for or the fear that I wont be liked, gee feels like jr. high all over again.

But life is meant to be enjoyed not endured.

So Ive decided to make some changes and Im excited to do it. My blog will be different than what youve seen in the past. Ive discovered a love (again) for writing and Im just going to put on my big girl panties and write about the things that matter to me because I think they just may matter to you too. And of course Im perfectly safe here in my pajamas with my hair in rollers, you cant see me! But if you could, you would laugh and so would I.

I hope you will be courageous with me and give yourself permission to make mistakes and start over. Its freeing and its real.

I grew up in the city and as a young person always loved the lights and hustle and bustle but as I got older I longed for a slower pace, perhaps even simplicity. Moving to the countryside isn't an option at this time but where I live now is the next best thing.
I live in the hills just north of Orange County and am fortunate to
have the best of what the city offers and the quiet neighborhood
with a countryside feel.

Longing for the farmhouse lifestyle has inspired my new collection
for Fall 2011, "Romantic Farmhouse".

I love this color it's called Stone.My home doesn't look a thing like a farmhouse. Built in the late 60's it is true to what was poplar at the time. Slowly I'm trying to make it warmer and cozier without a major overhaul.

Feminine and romantic but not over done. This design will be available in Barely Pink, Robin's Egg, Sage, Sand and Stone.

Thankfully all the electronic items in my little world are back to normal. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you that after everything went south, my refrigerator decided to join the party too.

Wow, it was hectic.

But finally I am back to work trying to finish my Holiday preview catalog and thought you might get a little chuckle from my helper that really isnt any help!

He simply must sniff everything thoroughly!

I think he's about done so I can finish up, I'd better hurry before something catches his fancy!

It's meltdown time here at the cottage!

I really wish I was here right now!

Just thought I'd let you all know that just about every piece of electronic equipment or gadget I have is on the blink! Lets start with the "check engine" light that wont go away despite going to the shop a few times and then theres the good ol cell phone that doesnt work in my house and sends & receives text messages whenever its NOT convenient. The computer, hmmmm. Where to start, well thats easy enough right? Wrong. The Word program is not working even though its been uninstalled, reinstalled, repaired and has had a remote tech guy log into it. And then my beloved printer or is it the Publisher program that wont allow graphics to be flipped for printing. And last but not least, my camera that won't let me download pictures of last weekend's Vintage Marketplace. Oh and I forgot how pictures & text come and go from Blogger and Facebook. Lets just say its going to be a long night and a very long Friday! Ugh.....

I'll be here under the mess!

Do you know Jenny Doh? Of Crescendoh?

You may know her from "Where Women Create" fame and I am thrilled that she has just released another beautiful book,

"Book of Inspiration" with Jo Packman.

She is a whirlwind of creative passion. One visit to her blog and you will quickly

learn that she has an amazing passion for life, people and art.

I contacted Jenny in March and invited her to
Launch Your Creativity,
not surprising that her calendar was full and
she could not attend but I was sure surprised when she asked
for my "Art Saves"story to feature on her website.

I guess Ive never considered myself to be an artist but I quickly learned from Jenny that you dont need to take a paintbrush to a canvass or sing as a tenor to be considered an artist. Thank you Jenny for teaching all of us that art has so many more forms than tradition would dictate. I didn't grow up in a home that encouraged the pursuit of passions and artful adventures to say the least. I bet many of you didnt either, well we are not alone in that. The stories that she features in her "Art Saves" column are nothing short of inspiring and I know upon reading them you will feel a strong sense of community.

Feeling Blue in My Studio

These hues of blue are so pretty...

Mixed with a cream rose and flax colored fabric...

I love birds, don't you? There's a nest on my patio.
I hope to take pictures before the babies fly away.

I just love this color combination. This is the flax again but it looks different in each picture. I think this is the truest representation. The color is called Stone and it is a true taupe taking on beige or gray depending on what its next to.

Interview by Cari Robertson

1. Tell me a little bit about your childhood - have you always enjoyed arts and crafts?

I have wonderful memories of my childhood; it was simple living with the advantage of being brought up on a small island, surrounded by family and friends continuously. I had several cousins from different families growing up on my street, from both mum and dad’s side of the family, besides having three siblings of my own. What child doesn’t like company to play with? We played outside every evening, all summer long, and on the weekends, we packed our car and left for the beach.

During the summer, I also remember sewing a lot, by hand. My doll had a new outfit everyday with clothes I designed for her using ideas I got from doll catalogs. I tried to put together the dresses as best I could. Drawing and sketching were also things I did continuously at home and school, and as I progressed, it drew a lot of attention from my high school teacher, Ms. Ventura. She encouraged me and inspired me in many ways.

2. What artistic expressions are your favorites? Do they change?

Artistic expressions do change for me, yes. There are so many ways to let out creativity and art. I do like to try everything once if I get the chance. I did a lot of painting and still life while in high school and after.

Then after that, I was more interested in textile design and sewing. At the same time, I developed a digital art and graphic design interest, also involving photography.

I am interested in most creative outlets and also have developed visions of my own creations in so many ways and would love to work on them all. It may take me a lifetime, but that is fine by me.

3. Tell me about an artist who inspires you.

There was no artist in particular that inspired me. It was more of a collection of artists and their work collected in a book. This one book called Enchanted World: The magic of pictures, by Bryan Holme, belonged to my brother, and I flipped through this book countless times, mesmerized by each painting and all different artwork styles and eras. I was particularly fascinated by the Baroque and Rococo era art work - the romance and the detail in their work. I could stare at each painting for a long time, searching for new hidden details. A later painting by Walter Crane called "Neptune’s horses" also fascinated me. Growing up on an island, obviously surrounded by the ocean, when I first saw Walter’s imagining of white horses representing the white foamy waves riding to the shores, it really struck me as amazing.

4. How did you first decide to publish a magazine? How did you decide on the focus of vintage arts and crafts?

After contemplating graphic design for a newspaper, I had this thought about how much more fun and inspiring it would be if I was creating a publication about artwork that I (and so many others I am connected with) enjoy. That is creating vintage charm. Honestly at first I thought that it was an idea way beyond me, but somehow I kept reaching toward it and searching about how I could actually make it work. The more I realized how possible it could be for me, the more excited I got, and the more ideas I had about the magazine. I guess, you can say, there was no turning back from there. It simply became a mission for me.

I also know so many of us who do the most beautiful work and show it in the most humble ways; yet, we all are proud of each other and what we create. It is amazing to me what a great, supportive community of artists we have created. For any of us, seeing our work printed and distributed in a magazine is the most amazing thing that could happen. But not many of us ever give much thought to seeing our own work published. My mission is to reach out and help artists reach a new level in publicity for their artwork and perhaps in a "not so overwhelming manner" since I am one of the crowd.

5. What is especially gratifying for you as you create the magazine?

The reviews and emails filled with compliments and encouragement to continue the good work. Especially those who are inspired by the magazine to explore their creative outlet.

6. What is difficult or scary about being in charge of the magazine?

I get more nervous the closer I get to releasing an issue. I work on the magazine continuously and being the one who develops it from start to finish, I don’t get the opportunity to look at it with fresh eyes like the readers would. That is scary to me - not knowing how it will look to those flipping through the magazine, since I cannot experience that.

7. How does being a single mom influence your creations?

It makes me appreciate more the time that I do find to create.

8. If you could spend a day creating anything with anyone, what would you choose and why?

Right now, I would say painting or mixed media collage. I have nothing in particular in mind, but I am inspired by so many beautiful things in nature and style that somehow I want to put them together on canvas.

9. What words of encouragement would you give other women out there who are looking for opportunities to be creative in a way that counts?

Never give up, of course. If an idea hits, don't dismiss it without any further thought. Even if it is too big and you have to start small, at least it is a start. There is always room to grow later on and perhaps make changes to where you can make it work better for your needs. After all, if you got excited about the idea in the first place, then you are probably going to enjoy it.

What an amazing day!

It is truly the afterglow effect over here in my tiny little world. As comments on facebook are posted and emails pour in but to have women that I think are accomplished raise their glass to LYC, I am taken back and humbled.

I am just blown away by their comments telling me how inspired they are after attending.

More than making beautiful things I am driven to inspire and encourage.

I cant thank all of you that supported me enough for your amazing contribution. I am planning the next 2 events (yes 2) and probably will never sleep again.

In the spirit of yesterday's game, here's a bit of wisdom:

When it comes to starting a business the thought of stepping out for all the world to see can be intimidating and to think that your failures will be public is enough to keep some from pursuing their goals.

However, if you do not try you will never know what you are capable of.

One week after I launched my line at the L.A.Mart, my husband was in a serious accident.

Needless to say my world was turned upside down. Because of the nature of his injuries I knew our lives would not resemble anything close to normal for quite some time.

I thought about the loan I had taken to start my business and my first thought was to just give the money back and put the dream on hold. But it was my sweet husband that said to me,"If you don't try you will never know what could have happened". And then he added,"You have the potential to really go somewhere with this."

That was all I needed. I decided to take his advice and stay on course.

It wasn't easy but what in life that has rewards is?

About two weeks after he came home from the hospital I received a phone call from

the J.Johnson Showroom with an offer to represent my line.

And that was the first of many surprises that has pushed me to continually reach for my goals.

There have of course been other obstacles to overcome that are par for the course when producing a product but there are always countless ways to overcome the obstacles.

It is important to keep perspective and surround yourself with quality people that share in your vision.

Those are two tried and true keys to success.

So I leave you with the cry from the field, "Never surrender"!

You may short change yourself of a beautiful dream.

This is a fun game to play with the kids, but stop and think about all the possibilities the New Year holds for you.

Imagine IF, you went back to school or started a new business or even pursued something that you have been dreaming about for a long time but never dared to set out on the adventure.

The last few years have been hard on everyone but the New Year holds promise for you. Take a moment to think about what really moves you, what speaks to your heart and you will find yourself filled with a new vision.

An Imperfect Christmas

I'm not quite sure where to start, something has been stirring within me all month long and I felt the need to share it with you.

Typically, I am a Christmas fanatic.

Translation: overwhelming excitement, lots of preparations including no fewer than 4 trees are ever put up. Every room in the house is decorated including the bathroom, yep!

A large collection of nutcrackers are displayed, bows tied to each chair at the dining room table. Candles grace the entry way to welcome guests.....

but this year its different.

Ive been feeling like all of the decorating, shopping and cooking were causing me to miss the true meaning of the season. The "hurry up and hurry some more" routine.

Do you know it? Im sure you do.

I heard something from a friend that was relating what someone
else said and it really resonated with me.

It was something like,"Dont let the season just roll off your back, take time to drink it in".

So true, isn't it?

Ive decided it doesn't matter whether the house is spotless and perfectly decorated.

As I look around at all the people in need this year and the horrible losses here in CA from the storms my decorating plan pales in comparison.

The perfect tree in my living room wont be what I remember in years to come. But I will remember helping neighbors, savoring quiet moments with my family, candlelight services at church and the sweetness of what Christmas means to Christians all over the world.

Mmmmm!

Butterscotch Fudge.
That's all I need to make my husband and sons, 2 brother in-laws and nephews melt like butterin a hot frying pan.

Need the trash taken out? The dogs fed?

Carry in the groceries?

Works like a charm.

Butterscotch Fudge

7oz. marshmallow cream

1-1/2 C. sugar

2/3 C. evaporated milk

1/4 C. butter

1/4 tsp. salt
2 C. butterscotch chips (12 oz)
2 tsp. vanilla
1Tbsp. grated orange peel
1C. walnuts if desired

Mix first 5 ingredients in a large saucepan. Bring to a full rolling boil over medium heat. Stir constantly for 4-5 minutes. Candy should reach the "softball" stage. The ingredients will double in size while boiling and shrink back down when removed from heat.

Remove from heat and stir in chips, vanilla and grated orange peel. Pour into 8x8 prepared pan. Top with nuts if desired, gently pressing into fudge. Allow to cool completely before relishing every last bite.

Ruth Harsham, owner of The Beautiful Life has been a personal inspiration to me. She is kind, warm, smart, funny and has given me some of the best advice a girl could ever ask for! Tracey of French Larkspur with her booming business and eye for detail is an amazing, inspiring woman. How she manages to answer every comment on her blog is beyond me, but that shows how important people are to her.

Nada Farm Life by Anne Marie is truly breathtaking. Although I haven't attended her barn sale we have emailed each other often. This woman leads a life that is so beautiful to watch. Visit her blog and fall in love with her family and a beautiful farm.

Chateau de Fleurs hosted by the beloved artist Christie Repasy and her amazing sister in-law Rita Reade of Mammabellarte . I had the pleasure of participating in their Christmas event just last week and it was an absolutely lovely event. She holds the Vintage Marketplace 4 times a year once for each season. There are several vendors who participate with more eye candy than one can imagine!

Featured in the photo is Lisa Loria's booth known for her down to earth personality and her "thinking out of the box art"

Just this past October I attended Glitterfest and it was more than inspirational. If you adore handmade items and glitter this is your ticket to fun.

Those gorgeously decorated bottles are from Christie Repasy.
